The Rolling Jubilee

If you owe the bank $100 that’s your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that’s the bank’s problem.
- Jean Paul Getty

Yesterday, Maxavision pointed me to a simple, yet brilliant idea, that the folks at Occupy Wall street are into now. It’s called Rolling Jubilee and it’s awesome.

Here is the git of it; as you know, we’ve been dragged into this so called ‘financial crisis’, because the Banks were selling and repackaging debts. Then selling these debts to each other and taking out insurances on the debts. Now I don’t need to go into this to deep, you can find how the derivatives markets work elsewhere, all you need to know is that banks trade debts to each other under the price of the actual debt.

YouTube Preview Image

So you can buy a mortgage of say 100.000 dollar for only 20.000 dollar, as you also buy the risk of not getting the money back from the original debtor. These debts are actually available on the free market. So some people from the metamovement came together and thought, why don’t we start buying up those debts and then proclaim them void. In essence freeing up 80.000 dollars!

Let that sink in for a few seconds.

And now check this: The going rate for debt is 1:20, which means that $50.000 will buy you a whopping $1.000.000 worth of debt. Katching!

They started to buy college debts (probably one of the next bubbles) and proclaimed then null and void, freeing debtors across the united states, for far less then the actual debts.

There is a catch. There always is.

As the debts are so entwined and packaged by the Banks, it’s next to impossible to know whose debts you are actually buying. So you might be freeing a debtor who really doesn’t need it, and leave the more tragic cases untouched. Still, with the vast hordes of the internet, it should become possible to sift trough the records and start finding one’s own debt, buying it at banking prices and then proclaim them null and void.

Masks of the Anon

It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.

Half of the internet has been blacked out, and the other half is busy talking about it. One would think that such an event would send a clear signal to the powers that be. Allowing corporate forces to control the free flow of information is not, I repeat not a good idea.  How many times do we have to repeat ourselves before we learn that corporations and industries don’t act in the best interest of ‘the people’.

Meanwhile, the Occupation spreads

“first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
- Ghandi

“And furthermore, I think The Financial System should be destroyed”
- free after Cato the Elder

As I still am a professional VJ I used my gig at Korsakoff, last VJ cafe as an chance to present my new set ‘#occupy Chaos’, of which I will dump some Livemixes on Youtube (or somewhere … ). Still need to figure out some music, I’m thinking about ‘fight the power’ or ‘get up stand up’, still not sure.

But I must admit that I’ve never received so many hugs, ‘boxes’ and handshakes then I did when I premiered that set last tuesday.

Meanwhile the ‘metamovement‘ is gathering some serious pace the last days, and it looks like important parts of the world are joining the occupation this Saturday (15 okt). Will this finally amount to anything? I don’t know, but we need to try. Now. Get over to http://www.occupytogether.org/ for more info and of course the inevitable http://www.occupyamsterdam.nl/

Note to self; need to update the homepage too. Need to get moar out there…

The Bailout-bubble

“[...] so much money was spent on ’saving’ the car industrie that even if it involved millions of jobs, it would have been cheaper to give each worker 100.000 dollar and have him find a new job”

- after Megan McArdle

Have you ever wondered what a “stimulus-package” means? – It means that nations are pumping money into the economy that could have been better spent on ‘real’ issues, like, ow, I don’t know, educucation, welfare, research, housing or even the arts. But no, instead our gouverments need billions of dollars, euros, yens and yuans to keep the suits up and happy.

Here is the whole story, it’s worth your 50 minutes.

The Battle in Syntagma Square

“So you think that money is the root of all evil.
Have you ever asked what is the root of all money?”

– - Ayn Rand

Most of you will have noticed that Greece is not doing very well lately, that is to say the powers that be are asking the country to bend over and take it up the ass, over and over again. Now most Dutch media (and international sources) are balently taking notes from Fox News and other less informed sources to try to analyse the situation. The situation is this; as we grew accustomed to enslaving huge parts of the world through IMF loans and ridiculous claims to accompany that debt, we are now imposing the same rules and regulations on people in our own backyard. Greece is an important part of the EU and of our own western cultural heritage. The great industrial leaders of our time don’t know the difference between the monetary system and democracy anymore and are taking industrialist advice to solve the situation, but all they are doing is pushing the country back to the dark ages by treating it like a spoiled child. This can and will happen to all nations if we do not stop them now.

But do not take my word for it, read it at Sturdy Beggars Theatre Company – Blog

What is going on in Athens at the moment is resistance against an invasion; an invasion as brutal as that against Poland in 1939. The invading army wears suits instead of uniforms and holds laptops instead of guns, but make no mistake – the attack on our sovereignty is as violent and thorough. Private wealth interests are dictating policy to a sovereign nation, which is expressly and directly against its national interest. Ignore it at your peril. Say to yourselves, if you wish, that perhaps it will stop there. That perhaps the bailiffs will not go after the Portugal and Ireland next. And then Spain and the UK. But it is already beginning to happen. This is why you cannot afford to ignore these events.
I have never been more desperate to explain and more hopeful for your understanding of any single fact than this:
The protests in Greece concern all of you directly.

Domino D-day

“Under capitalism man exploits man; under socialism the reverse is true”

- Polish Proverb

tic-tac, tic-tac ...

tic-tac, tic-tac ...

Se here are some facts to amuse you all.

I want you to take a long hard look at this image, and think about it when you watch the evening news tonight. What you see here is the debt that European countries owe each other, primarily Portugal, Spain, Italy, Ireland and Greece. And yes, they form a nice Pentacle, that is nice too.

Now take special note that the outgoing arrows are debts owed to countries not in the diagram; Italy owes $511 Billion to France ( 511.000.000.000, – ) or 20% of France’s GDP. Spain owes $220 Billion, ireland 60% and so on.

So if Greece fails, we might deal with it, but if Portugal Falls, Spain Falls. If Spain Falls, France and Italy will go down; if italy goes down France will go completely bankrupt and pull in Germany, Britain and Holland. etc. etc.  Now the question is not if, but when, this will happen.

Have a nice summer.

ZEITGEIST: MOVING FORWARD
Zeitgeist: Moving Forward, by director Peter Joseph, is a feature length documentary work which will present a case for a needed transition out of the current socioeconomic monetary paradigm which governs the entire world society. This subject matter will transcend the issues of cultural relativism and traditional ideology and move to relate the core, empirical “life ground” attributes of human and social survival, extrapolating those immutable natural laws into a new sustainable social paradigm called a “Resource-Based Economy.”

Quotes on Cultural Industry in several languages

Taken from “Creatie vs. Manipulatie”, in the process of Writing by Youp Kruijsdijk

Made me think of:
